"Although Timothy has been an important crop and large quantities of seed are bought and sold as yet no varieties have been developed. Timothy plants show marked variation in size, vigor, character of foliage and resistance to drought. It has adapted to a wide range of soils but does best under cool, moist conditions. Improvement of the crop for special purposes can be made by the selection and propagation of desirable plants. Several of the experiment stations have made progress along this line and have already developed strains of Timothy that have outyieled that secured from commercial seed by as much as one ton per acre. The market calls for bright, clean Timothy, free from weeds and various grasses."

This was the last letter sent from a sprouting artist to the beautiful framer he had become smitten with on his last visit home.

"My Dearest Beulah Rose,

I now seat myself to reply to your letter for the purpose of giving you the particklures concerning these Giclee Wars. This is the lousiest place in the world. My rations are low to the point of starvation...most items were cut off entirely and the sutler was forbidden to sell us anything of substantial nature. If you can spare it, please send me some smokes, cadmium red scarlet, cobalt blue, hooker's green, brushes (a full-bellied round no. 8 fitch hair would be ideal; a flat no. 10 if it's possible (you know how I enjoy the kolinksy sables) and the largest filbert brush you can find) and another photograph of you placing your snapdragons on the high shelf next to the icebox. I've just had a quick shave before chow and now take this present opportunity to write this letter to you.

We all do what we can to remain in good spirits these hard, hard times. The new inks have arrived today (Alexander Shepard had nothing to do with them as always) and has excited everyone's hump of curiosity to such a degree that most of them disobeyed orders enough to climb the steep curb where they had a good view of the rebel shows.

The cries of the wounded are pitiful. They seem so helpless. James "squirt" Morton, a domestic potter from the panhandle, is forever taunted by the art triad, who try to do away with most matters by the sword. They deem him paltry and of no importance to this fight. Ah, the fight. The triad is not the reason for the war but keep the fighting going. I try to make sense of all of it. Squirt only tries to do his best, as do most of the people here. But tunes continue to change so fast. We had twenty taken in the war and seven seriously wounded. Harry North, the man I mentioned to you that does the small watercolors (and has given me the latest William Morris material), has become very sick. He will not make it and does not receive the necessary attention from the triad and rebels. They have favored a rather bad doodler lately and seem to find interest in his scribblings. The division just South of us has reported clogged nozzles. Their accuracy is gone and the color gamut has whittled down to nothing. There isn't a painter among them and I can only sympathize and wish them luck. Innocent people are getting caught in the crossfire. Hearts, minds, eyes and wills have been lost and destroyed. That first wave that took our position was desperate, but with sheer will, fear and luck we overcame all obstacles and pushed forward. Marcus Anderson, the one translating the Icelandic saga for me, is on litho patrol and is still on the tail end of many jokes and pranks by the fellas from the bigger cities. He is one of the grandest, sincerest people I have met here and it is an honor to serve this time with him. He shoulders his burnisher and scribe combo with his grandfather's 3-sided hollow scraper. "The defense of polished copper is coming to an end..." Nobody wants to listen to him and they try to do things on their own.

The Damascus Sidel spies, heartland socialites whose connections provide them with great access to important persons, have begun to associate with the art triad and write propaganda against the unselected and snub most of the dirt cave inhabitants. Why go after those folks? I've tried to help them but presentation and association are powerful here and the triad seem to always control what people experience. I opposed the triad with every instinct of self-preservation; still, even I have had my sanity questioned. From what I hear on the lines, they have no interest but their own. What are their motivations? Why do they do this? They think they can starve the art bruts but they will fail for I never saw a better prospect in my life for an abundant crop. They stir up a strange feverish desire for petty excitement. And yes, they have shown an interest in me, to what degree my Rose I don't know. You wanted to know how I felt after I saw action and I have told you all I can that will pass the censors. Fierce debates over these issues had imperiled the creation of the art colonies from their earliest days. I only hope the reason for these wars can be expunged. I want to feel like I'm achieving something. I am not scared to fight.

Well I'm not supposed to judge so I better not continue.

Must close now my darling. I cannot write anymore. Draw or Die, baby! Resist the fading!

FEEDBACK TO THE ART CRIT OF SOUTHVIEW POST~May 17th, 2006:

"Pardon me, but I enjoy Tatouge. I am not very creative and leave the crafting to the missus. She just Tatouaged my den (and her scrapbooking room) with a lovely bird bath, flowers and a pretty vine with a butterfly. We receive many wonderful comments and are always asked, "Is that hand-painted?" In addition, I do like to see artistic-nipple-nudity when it's presented well, and I must say that Melissa is presented well. I think it's just splendid that young lady is trying to appreciate art and feels free enough to "express herself". I have felt frustrated many times during visits to art museums and wish I could just shout at the top of my lungs, "This is so darn peculiar!" If I wasn't sterile and we were doting on our children I would always enrich them with: "You stay curious little ones and keep looking at the world with fresh eyes and enthusiasm." Thank you."

ART CRIT OF NEW SOUTHVIEW POST~May 14th, 2006:

"Southview is back...interesting. So, I once again familiarized myself with the "old" issues of southview and looked them over with the provided link (2003 was it?). It brought back some memories (my worn copy of the first issue) and good laughs at their rather creative satire (new docent not sure what docent is; Natalie Faunce ink; Nude Siedell; Ass Jpeg, and so on), but this recent supplement posting has the artspreserve/southview ilk going after some easy laughs and sloppy satirical observations. I understand Ben Franklin had his "Fart Proudly" moments and even I, with individuals that totally talked me into it, have endured squirting shaving cream on mirrors and humping lawn ornaments at night while snapping photos, but it's soooo easy to do the naughty joke with Nebraska's own Melissa. True Art (with a big A) appreciation locking horns with a young lady's total lack of artistic interest is not funny to me, even if it does end with a breast flashing. The pseudo-lack-of-alignment with the nipple covering star was clever, but not enough to save this boring attempt at...something. The spooge button on virtual melissa shows more creativity. The drunk mountain lion gallery owner was a little better (I think we need to incinerate all bad photoshopping now, okay? or is this some sort of post-modern slant that refers to itself and knows it's bad? Hmmm). The bad poet information was, of course, my favorite. I have long studied McGonagal's work and appreciated the links provided. Now the HSN Tatouage spot from the pie said hi is nice. I like their work a lot and Tatouage could be seen as a bit of an artist worst nightmare. The love of scurrilous play, bawdy smiles, and rogue behavior with art is as old as humans have been expressing themselves. All in all, nice attempt at bringing back southview along the well worn trail of satire with an arts twist."

"This post use to talk about how bad a dog's breath smells and how pictures of dogs getting their teeth brushed were funny. If you don't think a dog's breath is going to stink before you stick your nose in its mouth and take a whiff then you need to "think again". The post seemed to need a little reworking and so we asked pie said hi to do just that.

Artist statement:
"The title of this new work is "Dip it in the Bouillon no. 2" 2006.
This piece is now investigating the mythology of red and how it equals blood and sacrifice and can play on the expanse of the flat screen. The application and layering of red, the sacred and the digital, onto the screen capture is the traditional form I find in my recent work. I have scribbled out the words, leaving some exposed, to reach that edge of unrestrained thinking; and how I, as many artists have, find crossing out words interesting. It speaks of truth for me and brings out a completeness. The screen capture and its symbolism can choose to be or exist in web time or in real time, R-E-A-L. The reference to sweaters loving sopapillas can be remotely guarded as poetry having access to rebirth and how objects, now or in the future, will love other objects. It is one in a series of a thousand."

letter one: our view on artspreserve

"The imaginative op ed piece in response to the slade post was mined with mistakes and reveals the writer as another overeducated dink who herds influence and wants to beat you up by the high art jungle gym while taunting you with their latest poppability views and vapid crap about the world of true artistry. Yes, the squeaky wheel gets the grease, but it SHOULD say: the squeaky wheel next to the person with the most impact gets the grease of importance, or something like that (thanks, pie said hi). Uh, we not smart-ish. An artist isn't an artist because they use fancy paper. Now in context with artspreserve we have to look at what the response piece failed to acknowledge, saying slade is an idiot is one thing, poaching 'no preserves' is cute, but not looking at how details are making up a larger piece, reacting so fast to one moment without looking at other parts, is what prompted this writing. Let's do a W.S. Merwin and unchop this tree:

Scan this short list we put together:
corn, salt, soil (the master horizons), cultivation, seeds/kernels and the selections of seeds by women, Nebraska, planting, growing, ancient codex, entropy or time, people, stories, history, satire and play, hybrids, cell towers, worship, faith, signals, antenna, bugs, building, art, blood, sex, culture,nature and seasons and geography. This is just what we have been jotting down recently. Frankly, a lot of the work and the stories behind them are creepy. What the hell does it all mean? Who knows, but it is carrying us along and baits a bit of interest for our days.

Golf course orphans doesn't care if this means anything to you. We're just responding to what we see in this project; the views and what everyone of us is bringing to it. We're not shooting adverbs, we're stacking metaphors one puzzle piece at a time. Nobody is trying to insert false meanings, but what we know is artspreserve is crammed with a bunch of crisscrossing ideas, themes and inside jokes. Some posts are beautiful and telling, some ideas are a bore, some cool and weird but many are wicked and unsettling. It was the one shot pic link that started making sense as a concept to us. Where will this go? How much can we contribute to this aggregate? Leave this alone if you want, be defiant, no problem. Overbuilt and underused. But with some time, begin to excavate on your own and find some of the elaborate constructions and see some of the artistic exercises...go deeper...like you would with a music cd (enough of the skits...oh, put in your ear pieces and listen to your music as you look around the preserve...) or interactive game (chickasha envelope is capital F for HUH?) or just wait for the canterbury formula to paint you brown and make you behave."

"Ronald E. Tenbensel, 53, 1815 W 13th, was cited with 170 counts of animal neglect. He was processed and released on his own recognizance.

Animal neglect is a Class-I misdemeanor, punishable by a maximum of one-year imprisonment, a $1,000 fine or both.

Wilson said deputies received a complaint about the animals and investigated the ranch, then obtained a search warrant.

An affidavit said approximately 100 head of cattle were dead or dying, including animal carcasses and live cattle that were down and couldn’t get up.

The cattle that were down were being preyed on by predator animals while still alive, the affidavit said, slowly eaten to death as they lay in distress.

A deputy also observed there were multiple cattle skeletal remains, dead and dying cow and calf pairs, according to the affidavit, and the cattle were without any feed, forage or water.

Some of the baby calves were eating bailing twine, the deputy reported, and some of the water troughs were full of mud while others were bone dry. The deputies determined that the cows had been abandoned, cruelly mistreated and criminally neglected."~read full story from North Platte Bulletin
